A blue and silver Spaceage solar cover sized for 15 foot round above ground pools. It floats directly on the water, bubble side down, and works whenever the pool is not in use.

How a solar cover earns its keep

Two things happen at once. Through the day the blue over silver film lets solar energy through to the water. Overnight, the bubble layer sits as a barrier against evaporation, which is where most pool heat actually goes. Covers of this type are rated to raise water temperature by as much as 15 degrees F, though how close you get depends on your climate and how consistently the cover goes back on.

Built for sun

The film is UV protected, since a solar cover spends its whole life in the harshest light the pool ever sees. Store it out of direct sun when it is off the water, keep it clean, and trim it to the pool edge in small stages if you want a closer fit.

Which way up does it go?

Bubble side down, against the water. The bubbles are what trap and transfer the heat, so a cover floated upside down does very little.

How much will it warm the pool?

Covers in this range are rated to raise water temperature by up to 15 degrees F. The real figure depends on your sun, your climate and how many hours the cover stays on.

Does it work at night?

That is where most of the benefit is. The bubble layer slows the evaporation and heat loss that strip warmth out of a pool overnight and on cool cloudy days.

Should I cut it to fit?

Many owners trim a solar cover to follow the pool edge. Cut it a little large and trim in stages, since material cannot be put back.
