Small part, real job

The locking ring is the collar that pulls the cell down into its plumbing joint and holds it there against system pressure. It is threaded plastic, and it is handled every time the cell comes out to be inspected or acid washed. That handling is what wears it out.

When to replace it

If the joint seeps and tightening the ring further does nothing, or you can see a hairline crack running up from the thread, the ring is done. Fitting a new one is quicker and far cheaper than chasing the leak anywhere else, and it saves you from cranking on a cracked ring until it lets go completely.
