Product details

The Dura Plastics 409-020SW is a 2-inch PVC sweep elbow with a slip socket on one end and a spigot on the other. It is a standard piece of pool plumbing hardware.

Why sweeps are used on pools

A standard 90 degree elbow turns water in a tight corner and creates turbulence doing it. A sweep uses a longer radius, so the flow curves rather than collides. On a pool that translates into less head loss, quieter plumbing and a pump that has to work less hard for the same flow. It matters most on the suction side and on any system where a variable speed pump is being run slowly for efficiency, because head loss eats directly into what that pump saves you.

The Slip x Spg configuration

The slip end is a socket for 2-inch pipe. The spigot end is a plain male end the same size as pipe, so it glues directly into another fitting or a valve socket without a short stub of pipe between them. That saves a joint and a few inches of space on a tight equipment pad.

Installation

It is solvent welded like any PVC fitting. Cut square, deburr the pipe, dry fit first, then prime and cement both surfaces and seat the joint with a quarter turn. Let the joint cure fully before you bring the system up to pressure.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What does Slip x Spg mean?
Slip is a socket that a length of pipe glues into. Spigot is a plain male end sized like pipe, so it glues into another socket. This fitting has one of each, which lets you join it straight to a valve or another fitting without a stub of pipe between them.
Why a sweep elbow instead of a standard 90?
A sweep has a longer radius, so water changes direction gradually rather than hitting a corner. That costs less head, which matters most on the suction side of the pump and anywhere a variable speed pump is being run at low speed for efficiency.
What size pipe does it take?
2 inch. The slip end accepts 2-inch PVC pipe, and the spigot end fits a 2-inch socket.
How is it installed?
It is solvent welded. Cut the pipe square, deburr it, apply the correct PVC primer and cement, and make the joint with a quarter turn as you seat it. Let it cure before pressurizing the system.
