Product details

The Waterway 400-5080 is a 2 in. union with male pipe thread on one end and a female slip socket on the other. It is the fitting that joins 2 in. pool pipe to a threaded pump or filter port.

Why the union matters

Every piece of equipment on a pad eventually comes off for service or replacement. A union in the line means that job is a matter of loosening a collar by hand. Without one it means a saw, new pipe and fresh glue, and a plumbing repair on top of the original job.

Fitting it

The threaded end screws into the equipment port with PTFE tape or a pool rated thread sealant, tightened by hand plus a modest turn. The slip end is solvent welded to 2 in. pipe. Keep sealant out of the slip socket so the joint bonds properly.

What are the two ends?
One end is male pipe thread, which screws into a threaded port. The other is female slip, which is solvent welded onto 2 in. PVC pipe.
Why fit a union at all?
A union lets you separate the pipe from the equipment by hand. Without one, pulling a pump or filter means cutting pipe and gluing it back.
What size pipe does it take?
2 in. pipe on the slip side, and a 2 in. female threaded port on the threaded side.
Do I need thread sealant?
Yes on the male pipe thread. Use PTFE tape or a sealant rated for pool plumbing there, and keep it off the slip socket, which is glued.
