The Hayward SPX1091Z9 is a threaded extension coupling, 1-1/2 in. male iron pipe thread on one end and 1-1/2 in. female iron pipe thread on the other, finished in white.
What it solves
Sometimes a threaded port ends up too deep to reach: a skimmer fitting set back in the deck, a return that finishes short of the wall face, a valve that sits behind other equipment. This coupling threads into the existing female fitting and gives you the same 1-1/2 in. female port a little further out, with no size change and no cutting or gluing.
Installing it
Wrap the male thread with sealant tape or use thread paste, then hand tighten and give it a modest turn with a wrench. Plastic threads do not need force, and overtightening is the usual way these fittings crack.
