The Hayward SP14952S is a union assembly for pool plumbing. It joins on the 2" side with a coupling that seats over the outside of the union connector, while 1-1/2" pipe fits on the inside of that same coupling, which is what lets one fitting serve both pipe sizes.
Why a union matters
Glued pool plumbing is permanent until somebody cuts it. A union breaks that run into a joint you can undo by hand, so a pump, filter or heater can be lifted out for service and put back without a saw, fresh couplings and a wait for glue to cure. Installers put them either side of equipment for exactly that reason, and they are usually the first thing a service tech looks for on an unfamiliar pad.
