This is the black replacement union nut Pentair lists as 270141Z, also referenced as 270141. It is the nut that pulls a union connection tight where plumbing meets the pump or the valve body.

Where it is used

The same nut turns up in two places: on the Sta-Rite SuperMax and Pentair SuperFlo pumps, and on the Pentair push pull valves 263052, 263053 and 263064. That makes it a common spare for a service van, because it is the piece most often lost or cross threaded when equipment comes apart.

When to replace it

Union nuts fail in two ways. The threads strip, usually from being started crooked, or the nut cracks after years of sun and repeated tightening. Either way the joint weeps and no amount of extra torque will close it. Fitting a fresh nut, and checking the union O-ring while the joint is open, puts it right.
