Product details

The Hayward SP14953S is a 1-1/2 inch union in ABS, with a slip socket on one side and a threaded connection on the other.

Why unions matter

Unions are the joints in a pool system that come apart by hand. Every pump, filter and heater that has a union on each side can be pulled out for service or replacement without cutting pipe, and put back the same afternoon. Systems plumbed without them turn a simple seal change into a plumbing job.

Slip and thread

The slip side glues onto 1-1/2 inch pipe. The threaded side screws to a threaded port on a piece of equipment. Use the right sealant on the thread and do not overtighten plastic threads, since they split more readily than they strip.

What are the two ends?

Why fit a union at all?
A union lets the pipe be broken at a joint by hand. Without one, taking a pump or heater out means cutting the pipe and gluing it back afterwards.
Does it come with the o-ring or nut?
It is supplied as a union, which is the two halves and the nut that draws them together. Check the seal is seated and undamaged before tightening.
