The mistake to avoid
When a union drips, the instinct is to lean on the collar. That does not work. A union seals on the o-ring, not on clamping force, and cranking the collar down distorts the faces and can crack the nut. If it weeps after hand tightening, the o-ring is done.
Fitting
Clean the groove, check that no grit is trapped in it, and put a thin film of silicone based lubricant on the new o-ring before assembly. It seats more evenly and comes apart far more easily next time.
