Why the short section exists
A Polaris feed hose is not one long tube. It is a run of separate sections with fittings between them, and the short adapter length is what joins the hose to the cleaner end of the run. Building the hose this way means one damaged length can be swapped out on its own instead of replacing the whole assembly.
