Reading them properly
Dip the strip once and pull it straight out. Do not shake it or swirl it through the water, and hold it level rather than letting the pads run into each other. Compare against the color chart on the tube in the time the label calls for, in daylight if you can. A strip read too early or too late will send you chasing a problem that is not there.
Storage
Strips are hygroscopic. Leaving the cap off, or handling the pads with wet fingers, spoils the whole tube. Close it immediately, keep the desiccant inside and store it somewhere dry and out of the sun.
Order of adjustment
Alkalinity is the reading to settle first, because it holds pH steady. Chasing pH while alkalinity is out of range means adjusting the same thing over and over.
