Epoxy is the longest lasting of the common pool coating types, which is why it is chosen for pools that are being recoated rather than repainted every couple of seasons. It also has the least tolerance for a poor surface. Everything depends on the surface being clean, sound, and prepared the way the manufacturer specifies.
Check what is already on the pool
Epoxy has to go over epoxy or over correctly prepared bare surface. Applying it over a rubber based or acrylic coating will not hold. If you do not know what is on the pool, test a small area before you commit to a full recoat.
