Product details

The Dura Plastics 409-015SW is a 1-1/2 inch sweep elbow in slip by spigot. It turns a pipe run through 90 degrees on a long radius rather than a sharp corner.

Why the radius matters

Every turn in a pipe costs the pump something. A standard elbow makes water change direction abruptly and the turbulence that follows shows up as head loss, which the pump has to work against for as long as the system runs. A sweep takes the same turn over a longer arc, so the water carries through with less disruption. On one fitting it is a small difference. On an equipment pad with several turns it is the sort of thing that shows on a power bill.

Slip by spigot

The slip end is a socket that accepts pipe. The spigot end is sized like pipe and goes into another fitting socket. That combination lets you go straight from this elbow into a valve, a union or another fitting without cutting a short nipple of pipe and adding a joint. Fewer joints means fewer places for a leak to start later. Both ends are solvent weld, so assembly is primer and cement as usual.

What does slip x spg mean?
Slip is a socket that a pipe or spigot goes into. Spg is a spigot, an end sized like pipe that goes into another socket. So this fitting takes pipe on one side and plugs into a fitting on the other.
Why choose a sweep over a standard elbow?
A sweep turns the water through a longer radius. That costs less head loss than a sharp 90, so the pump works less to move the same flow.
Is it threaded?
No. Both ends are solvent weld, so it goes together with PVC primer and cement.
Where is it most useful?
Anywhere a run has to turn and the flow matters, particularly the suction side and around the pump and filter where head loss is worth saving.
