The Glacier Pool Coolers GPC-25 is a pool chiller for pools under 20,000 gallons. It cools with a fan and the pool's own water: no refrigerant, no heat exchange and no gas. Glacier says its residential units bring the water down an average of 10 to 15 degrees F over an overnight run of 12 to 14 hours.

How it cools

Pool water turns a set of spray arms inside the cabinet while the fan draws air up through it, and the heat leaves with the air. The cooled water gathers in a basin, and a small pump on a float switch returns it to the pool every two to three minutes. It does its work at night. By Glacier's own guide a pool will not lose degrees in daylight, so the unit runs with the pump after dark and holds the temperature by day.

Choosing the size

Glacier sizes its residential chillers on gallons: the GPC-25 for pools under 20,000, the GPC-210 for pools under 30,000 and the GPC-215 for pools under 45,000. Its figures are averages, and it says so: full sun, an exposed site, dark plaster and a deep pool all add to the heat the unit has to carry off.

Before it is installed

A chiller is not plumbed like a heater. The cooled water goes to the suction side of the pool pump or to a line of its own, and a unit piped the way a heater is will not cool the pool. The GPC-25 wants a 2 by 2 ft pad in open air, 1-1/2 inch connections, about 30 GPM and a 110/115 V circuit for its 8.5 A. It stands 63 inches high and 34 wide and weighs 125 lb dry. How does the Glacier GPC-25 pool chiller work?
