Inground winter cover questions

What size winter cover fits a 16 x 40 ft inground pool?

A 21 x 45 ft cover, the pool plus 5 ft, with 2.5 ft of overlap on every side. These are sold as 16 x 38/40, one cover cut for both pools.

How many water tubes does a 16 x 40 ft pool need?

17 tubes of 8 ft, or 14 of 10 ft. The 21 x 45 ft cover is 132 ft around its edge, and the tubes lie end to end along that, on the deck.

Which covers made for larger pools also fit a 16 x 40 ft pool?

A 23 x 45 ft cover leaves 3.5 ft on the sides and 2.5 ft on the ends. A 25 x 49 ft leaves 4.5 ft all round, and a 25 x 50 ft leaves 4.5 ft on the sides and 5 ft on the ends. They are grouped under Also fits.

Do I need a cover pump?

With a solid cover, yes. It has no way to shed rain and snowmelt, and the weight of standing water drags the cover into the pool. A mesh cover drains into the pool instead and does not need one.

Are the water tubes what makes the cover safe?

No. Water tubes hold the cover down, and neither they nor the cover is a safety device. Never substitute bricks or blocks: they tear the cover, and they go into the pool with anyone who falls in.
