The A&B Brush Manufacturing 5000 is a 6-1/4 inch straight algae brush with a blue aluminum back and stainless steel bristles. It is the tool you reach for when a patch of algae or staining will not come off with the everyday nylon brush.
Why steel and why narrow
Nylon bristles flex away from a hard deposit. Stainless steel does not, so it cuts into the film instead of polishing it. The narrow 6-1/4 inch head is deliberate as well: all of your pressure goes onto a small area, which is what breaks an established spot loose. The aluminum back keeps the bristle rows properly anchored while you work.
Know your surface first
This belongs on plaster, gunite and concrete, where a steel bristle does no harm. Keep it away from vinyl liners and from painted or fiberglass finishes, which will show the marks. On those surfaces a nylon brush and a longer soak with algaecide is the right approach.
