E-Z Patch 1 F.S. is a white plaster repair mix formulated to set fast, in a 3 lb size that covers about 1 sq ft at 3/8 inch depth. It is intended for chips, cracks and worn spots in a plastered pool surface, and it can be worked underwater or above water with the level dropped.
Why the fast set version
The quick set chemistry is what makes an underwater patch possible: the mix stiffens in your hand before it can wash out, so it can be pressed into the repair and troweled flat. The same property makes it the right choice for cold weather work and for repairs that will be painted afterward. Fast Set formulas also skip the Liquid Acrylic Bonder step that other plaster patches require.
Working with it
Chip the damaged area at least 3/8 inch deep with the edges cut straight down rather than beveled, and clean the surface first. Add water sparingly and mix thick, using warm water for a faster set and cold water to slow it down. Work in small amounts, because the mix is only usable for a few minutes once it is wet.
The formula is a modified cement containing pozzolans, siliceous volcanic ash, and polymers. Store the unopened product between 30 degrees F and 110 degrees F. After an above water repair the pool can be refilled in four hours, and swimming can resume the following day.
