The UltraPure 1005500, model BFO3-85, is a high output ozone generator that treats pool water as it circulates. UltraPure calls the family an automatic water cleaner, and the description is accurate: it runs with the system and continually burns out the contaminants swimmers introduce.

Oxidation, not sanitizing

Any alternative treatment that claims to replace chlorine or bromine has to do three things: hold a stable measurable residual, kill viruses, bacteria and algae, and oxidize what bathers bring into the water. Chlorine and bromine are the only sanitizers that manage all three, so they stay in the pool. What they are not good at is the third job. Ozone is a far stronger oxidizer, so this unit takes that work over and leaves the chlorine or bromine to provide a free available residual.

What changes in the water

Combined chlorine and bromine compounds are the ones responsible for the harsh smell, the irritated eyes and the sense that a pool needs more chemical than it should. With ozone handling oxidation those compounds are eliminated rather than accumulated. Incomplete oxidation accounts for as much as 70 percent of chlorine and bromine consumption, so the chemical bill and the day to day fuss both come down.
