What it is for
Closing an above ground pool usually means dropping the water below the skimmer so nothing is left standing in it to freeze. The plug seals the skimmer throat, which keeps water out of the skimmer body over the winter. A skimmer left open and holding water is one of the most common things to crack by spring.
