What a union does for you

The union is the reason a pump can be removed in ten minutes instead of an afternoon. Break the two collars and the pump lifts out, leaving the suction and return plumbing intact. Cut that same pipe instead and every future seal change, impeller clean or motor swap starts with a plumbing repair.

When it needs replacing

Plastic unions fail in predictable ways. The collar cracks from being pulled up too hard, the threads cross when the nut is started at an angle, or the sealing face gets scored and will no longer hold against a worn o-ring.
