The Intermatic PX50 is a 50 watt safety transformer for pool and spa lighting. It takes 120V in and offers 12, 13 and 14 volt taps out, in a beige steel enclosure.

What it is for

Transformers of this type are specifically designed to supply 12 volts to pool and spa lights, submersible fixtures and outdoor garden lights. The safety construction is what separates them from a general purpose transformer: a grounded shield sits between the primary and secondary windings to assure safe operation, and built in circuit protection disconnects power to the transformer if a defect or an overload occurs.

Choosing the tap

The three output voltages exist because cable runs lose voltage. A short run to a single fixture is happy on the 12 volt tap. A long run, or several fixtures on one circuit, may arrive dim on 12 volts and read correctly when moved up to 13 or 14.

Sizing

Total the wattage of everything on the circuit and stay under the transformer rating. This is the 50 watt unit; Intermatic builds the same enclosure style in larger ratings for bigger lighting loads.

Why are there three output voltages?
Long cable runs drop voltage before it reaches the fixture. The 13 and 14 volt taps let you feed a little extra so the lamp still sees close to 12 volts at the far end.
What size transformer do I need?
