Product details

The Intermatic PX600 is a 600 watt safety transformer for pool and spa lighting. It takes a 120 volt supply and steps it down to a selectable 12, 13 or 14 volts for submersible fixtures and outdoor lighting, in a beige steel enclosure.

What makes it a safety transformer

A grounded shield runs between the primary and secondary windings, which is the feature that separates a safety transformer from an ordinary one when the load is sitting in water. Built in circuit protection backs that up by disconnecting power to the transformer if there is a fault or an overload rather than letting it run on.

Picking the output tap

The three output voltages exist because low voltage cable loses voltage over distance. A short run is happy on 12 volts; a long one arrives dim, and moving up to the 13 or 14 volt tap puts the fixture back where it should be. Size the total lamp load against the 600 watt rating, and leave headroom rather than running the transformer at its limit.

What is the input and output?
Input is 120 VAC at 6 amps, 60 Hz. Output is selectable at 12, 13 or 14 volts.
Why would I pick 13 or 14 volts instead of 12?
Long low voltage cable runs lose voltage along the way. Tapping a higher output at the transformer compensates so the fixture still sees close to 12 volts.
