Coates PHS Series 54 kW Electric Pool Heater, 240V Single Phase, 12454PHS-4

The Coates 12454PHS-4 is a PHS Series electric pool heater rated at 54 kW on 240 V single phase power, drawing 225 A at full load. PHS heaters cover the 36 to 57 kW end of the Coates range and add a digital thermostat to the features of the smaller models.

How it works

Four Incoloy heating elements sit in a stainless steel tank inside a powder coated steel cabinet. A built-in flow switch keeps the elements off until at least 20 GPM is moving through the heater, and a manual reset high limit set at 118 degrees F cuts power if the water overheats. The digital thermostat reads the water entering the heater and holds a set point anywhere from 40 to 104 degrees F. Heavy duty contactors switch the load, element fusing is already installed, and indicator lights show control power, flow, high limit status and element operation.

Installation

With no flue or exhaust, the heater can go in an equipment room, shed or basement, and it is UL listed for indoor or outdoor installation. Plumb it through its 2 in. male NPT connections between the filter discharge and the pool, add a drain valve on the inlet side, and use plastic pipe rated for at least 120 degrees F. Do not put a shutoff valve between the heater outlet and the pool: Coates permits a swing check valve there, or a ball or gate valve only when a 30 psi pressure relief valve is fitted between that valve and the heater. At 225 A single phase this is a large electrical load, so have the service, disconnect and conductors sized by a qualified electrician under Article 680 of the National Electrical Code.

Care

Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.8 with alkalinity and calcium hardness in balance, since out of balance water can damage the heater. It is not for salt water pools. Drain and flush the heater every year before winter, and never let water freeze inside it.
