Product details

The Pentair MasterTemp 400 is a 400,000 BTU propane gas heater for pools and spas, model EC-462029. It is the biggest heater in the MasterTemp line and the one most often chosen where a large pool has to be kept warm or a spa has to come up to temperature quickly.

Why MasterTemp

Pentair built the MasterTemp around efficiency, convenience and reliability: it converts fuel to pool heat efficiently, the controls are easy for a homeowner to operate, and the design has been in service long enough that techs know it well and parts are readily available.

Before you order

This is the propane model; a natural gas version is sold separately. Gas heaters must be installed by a qualified professional to local code, and the unit ships by freight on a pallet.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What is the difference between EC-462029 and 460737?
Both are Pentair's MasterTemp 400 for propane. Pentair keeps part numbers that begin with EC- for online sale and sells 460737 through dealers. This listing is EC-462029.
What warranty does Pentair give the propane MasterTemp 400, EC-462029?
One year, parts only. That is Pentair's warranty for its e-commerce (EC) models and for online purchases. The two years printed in Pentair's brochures is its standard warranty, which does not cover a heater bought online.
Where is the manual for the propane MasterTemp 400, EC-462029?
Under Downloads on this page, as the Owners Manual. It is Pentair's MasterTemp Installation and User's Guide, part number 472592, which covers the 175,000 to 400,000 BTU models in natural gas and propane, the HD and ASME versions included.
What do the ERR codes on the MasterTemp 400, EC-462029, mean?
Each one names the safety device that opened. ERR PS is the water pressure switch, which means no water is flowing through the heater. ERR HLS is the high limit switch, ERR AFS the air flow switch, ERR IGN a failed ignition and ERR SFS a stack flue temperature above 480 degrees F. What to check for each is in our pool heater error code guide.
Is EC-462029 the natural gas or the propane MasterTemp 400?
Propane. Pentair builds each MasterTemp 400 for one fuel, and the natural gas version is a separate part number.
Can the MasterTemp 400, EC-462029, be converted to natural gas?
Pentair's manual says not to attempt a fuel conversion yourself and to refer it to a qualified service technician or gas supplier. If the pool is on natural gas, the natural gas MasterTemp 400 is the heater to order.
