What the skimmer does

The skimmer is the pump inlet at the water line. It pulls the surface film, leaves and insects off the top of the water before they sink, and it is the first thing to check when a pump keeps losing prime. On an above ground pool the whole assembly is a wall fitting rather than a built in throat, so replacing it is a matter of the right part number and a sound gasket.
