What a skimmer does
Nearly everything that fouls a spa arrives at the surface first. Leaves, insects, pollen, and the oily film left behind by sunscreen and lotions all float. A skimmer draws water off that top layer and pulls the debris out before it becomes waterlogged and sinks to the floor, where it is much harder to remove and starts consuming sanitizer.
Why it is worth keeping in good order
A skimmer is the first stage of filtration. Everything it traps is material that never gets as far as the pump basket, the impeller or the filter element. A cracked skimmer body, a missing weir or a housing that no longer seals lets that job fall to the parts downstream, which are more expensive to replace.
