How a DE grid works
The grid itself does not do the filtering. Diatomaceous earth is drawn out of the skimmer and coats the fabric, and it is that thin cake of powder that catches the fine dirt. The grid is the frame and the cloth that hold the cake in place while water passes through.
When to replace one
DE returning to the pool after you charge the filter is the classic sign. So is a filter that will not hold pressure or that keeps needing more powder. Open the tank, lift the grid assembly out and look at each element for tears, split seams and crushed frames. Measure whatever you pull out, because a grid set usually contains more than one size.
