What the grid does
A DE filter works by holding a coat of diatomaceous earth on the fabric of its grids. That coat is the actual filter medium, and the grid is what carries it. When the fabric tears or thins, DE passes straight through to the pool and the filter stops holding pressure the way it should.
Replacing them
Grids in one tank are the same age and have done the same work, so a single torn grid rarely means the rest are healthy. With the tank open it costs nothing to look over every grid, and doing the set at once saves a second teardown a season later.
