Why it matters
The lock ring is what clamps the filter lid onto the body, and it is holding back the full working pressure of the system. Rings crack from age, from being overtightened, and from being knocked during cartridge changes. If yours is split, distorted or will no longer draw the halves together evenly, replace it before the filter goes back under pressure. Replacing the tank o-ring at the same time saves a second teardown.
