What the diffuser does
Water entering a cartridge filter arrives with force. The diffuser breaks that stream up and spreads it around the tank so the flow reaches the whole cartridge pack rather than blasting one section of one element.
Why it matters
When the diffuser cracks or goes missing, the elements stop loading evenly. One area clogs and wears while the rest of the pack does little, cleaning intervals get shorter, and cartridge life drops. Putting the diffuser back is a cheap way to protect a much more expensive set of cartridges.
