Product details

The Hayward CX400G is the o-ring used in two places: the lid of the Easy-Clear C400 and C550 cartridge filters, and the strainer cover of NorthStar pumps manufactured before 2003.

Check the date on a NorthStar

The pump application is limited to units built before 2003. Hayward changed the strainer cover on later NorthStar pumps, so confirm the manufacturing date before ordering rather than going by the model name alone.

What a tired o-ring costs you

On the pump, a hardened or split lid o-ring lets air into the suction side. The pump loses prime, runs noisy and moves less water, and people replace impellers and seals chasing a fault that lives in a ring worth a few dollars. On the filter, the same failure shows as a lid that weeps or sprays under pressure.

Fitting

Clean the groove, fit the ring dry of grit, and use a silicone based o-ring lubricant. That helps it seat evenly and stops it grabbing the lid the next time the lid comes off.

Will it fit my NorthStar pump?
It fits NorthStar pumps manufactured before 2003. Later pumps use a different strainer cover o-ring, so check the manufacturing date before ordering.
Which filters does it fit?
The Hayward Easy-Clear cartridge filters, models C400 and C550. It is the tank lid o-ring.
Why does my pump keep losing prime?
A flattened, cracked or dried out lid o-ring is the most common cause. It lets air into the suction side, and the pump loses its prime as a result.
Should I grease it?
A silicone based o-ring lubricant is standard practice here. It helps the ring seat, keeps it supple and stops it sticking to the lid when the lid is next opened.
