Product details
The Hayward CX250G is the lock knob for Star-Clear cartridge filters, covering the C-250, C-500, C-750 and C-1000 models.
What it does
The knob threads onto the tie rod and pulls the filter head down onto the tank. That clamping load is what keeps the tank o-ring compressed and the filter sealed under running pressure. It also gets turned by hand every time the cartridge is cleaned.
Why it fails
Between the sun, the chlorine and the hand tightening season after season, the plastic goes brittle and the threads round off. Once the knob will not pull the head down properly the filter weeps at the band, and owners usually replace the tank o-ring first and are surprised when the leak stays. If the knob spins without drawing down, that is your answer. The tie rod itself is a separate part if that has also gone.
