The Hayward CX900F is the filter head lid o-ring for the Star Clear Plus cartridge filters: C751, C900, C1200, C1750 and C1900. It is the genuine Hayward part, and Hayward also carries it under the Pro Grid DE separation tank DE-900 and DE-1100 parts.
What it seals
An o-ring is a plain round gasket that squeezes between two faces to hold pressure. This one sits between the filter head and the body. When the filter is running, everything in the tank is under pump pressure, and this ring is what keeps it there.
Why it fails
Sun, chlorine and repeated compression harden the rubber and take the spring out of it. Once the ring has flattened it stops filling the groove, and the filter starts to seep or spray at the lid. Because the head has to come off to clean the cartridge, most owners fit a new ring during a routine element clean rather than waiting for the leak.
Fitting
Wipe the groove and the sealing face clean, seat the ring without stretching it, and use a silicone based o-ring lubricant. Petroleum grease swells the rubber and will shorten the life of the new seal.
