The symptom it fixes

A cartridge filter that starts weeping right after it has been opened for a cleaning. When a housing is split and reassembled, a seal can pick up a nick from grit, get pinched under the band, or simply have taken a permanent flat spot from years of compression. Any of those puts a slow drip at the seam.

Why the factory set

O-rings are cut to the groove they sit in. A ring from a bulk assortment that is close on diameter but wrong on cross section will seat badly and leak again a few weeks later. Fitting the correct set while the filter is already open saves opening it twice.
