Product details

The Hayward SB2KIT is the FPM o-ring for SB series basket strainers in the 1-1/4 inch through 2 inch sizes. It is the genuine Hayward part.

What FPM buys you

FPM is a fluoroelastomer, a synthetic rubber specified where a seal has to face chemicals and heat that would harden or crack ordinary compounds. On a strainer that seals against a suction line, that resistance translates directly into a seal that keeps its shape for longer.

The fault it fixes

A basket strainer lid seals against suction, and suction is unforgiving of a poor seal. Once the o-ring flattens, cracks or picks up a nick from being levered out, it draws air rather than water. The pump loses prime, the basket fills with air, and the fault gets blamed on the pump, the valves or the skimmer long before anyone looks at a small rubber ring. Fit a fresh one and use a pool rated lubricant on it. Petroleum grease will destroy the seal you just paid for.

What is FPM?
FPM is a fluoroelastomer, a synthetic rubber used where a seal has to resist chemicals and heat better than standard nitrile or EPDM.
My pump keeps losing prime. Could this be why?
It is a likely cause. If the strainer lid o-ring is flattened, cracked or nicked it draws air into the suction side, and the pump loses prime no matter how well everything else is working.
Should I lubricate it?
Use a lubricant rated for pool o-rings. Petroleum based grease attacks seals and shortens their life.
