What it does
Every pressure filter traps air. The bleeder valve on top of the tank is how you get it out: open it on startup and hold it open until water rather than air comes through. Air left in a filter cushions the tank, throws off the pressure gauge reading, and makes the filter work badly.
Why it is sold with the o-ring
When a bleeder weeps or will not seal, the o-ring is usually the culprit rather than the valve body. Both come together here, so the repair is complete in one part.
