Why it is worth doing

O-rings are the cheapest thing in the system and the most common cause of a leak or an air draw. Rubber hardens, takes a permanent set in the groove and stops recovering when the joint is opened. A ring that looks fine can still be the reason the pump will not hold prime.

Fitting

Clean the groove and the mating face, then use a silicone o-ring lubricant on the ring before assembly. It seats more evenly, and it does not weld itself to the housing before the next service.

Is this a filter o-ring or a pump o-ring?
Pentair lists it both ways. It is described as the stand pipe o-ring and as the strainer pot to pump body gasket on the Volute Hydropump, and it turns up in both the PacFab DE filter parts lists and the Hydropump parts lists.
Which models is it shown against?
The PacFab FNS fiberglass DE filters FNS24, FNS36, FNS48 and FNS60, the Nautilus and Nautilus Plus DE filters, the PacFab Hydropump 590 and 700 series, and the Sea Horse cartridge filters.
Should I lubricate it?
Yes. A silicone based o-ring lubricant helps the ring seat evenly and stops it sticking to the mating face, which makes the next service much easier.
How do I know the o-ring is the problem?
A hardened or flattened o-ring shows up as a drip at the joint when the pump runs, or as air in the pump pot that will not clear. Both point to the seal before they point to anything expensive.
