Product details

The Pentair 274494 is the valve adapter o-ring, 2-3/8 in. inside diameter with a 3/16 in. cross section. Pentair also lists it as the bulkhead adapter o-ring, references it under the standard #2-332 size, and it appears in parts listings as 274494Z.

Where it goes

It seals the adapter joint between the valve and the filter tank. Pentair lists it for the Tagelus filter, top and side mount valves, the FullFloXF backwash valve, FNS filters, and the Nautilus and Nautilus Plus DE filters, which is why the same small ring turns up in so many different parts diagrams.

Why it fails

An o-ring is a round rubber gasket that is squeezed between two faces to hold pressure. Chlorine, heat and constant compression harden it and take the spring out of the rubber. Once it has taken a set it no longer fills its groove, and the joint begins to seep whenever the pump runs.

Fitting

Clean the groove and both sealing faces, seat the ring square without stretching it, and lubricate with a silicone based o-ring lubricant. Petroleum grease attacks the rubber and will cost you the new ring.
