What it does
The sight glass on a dial valve is how you tell when a backwash has run long enough. The deflector sits in the flow path at the glass so the water you are watching is representative of what is leaving the filter. Without it, the glass can look clear while the filter is still purging, or stay cloudy after the job is done.
