What the grid does
A D.E. filter does not trap dirt in the grid itself. The grid is a fabric covered frame that holds a coat of diatomaceous earth, and it is that powder layer doing the filtering. When the fabric splits, pulls away from the frame or blinds over with oils and scale, the powder washes through instead of holding, and the pool gets cloudy while D.E. blows back through the returns.
Before you order
Measure the grid you are replacing. Element sets commonly combine several full height grids with one or two shorter partial grids, and only the ones matching 16-1/2 by 18 inches are covered by this part. If the set is original to the filter, plan on doing the whole set at once rather than opening the tank again in a season.
