What the cluster is
A DE filter works because the grids hold a coat of diatomaceous earth. The cluster is the assembled group of those grids, held in their correct spacing and ready to drop into the tank. Buying it as one assembly means every element in the filter is the same age and the same condition, which is how a DE filter is meant to run.
When to replace
Grids fail by tearing, by fabric thinning out, or by separating from the frame. The tells are DE dust returning to the pool after a recharge, pressure that rises again soon after a clean, and grids that will not come clean no matter how carefully they are rinsed. Once the fabric is compromised, patching one grid usually just moves the problem to the next one.
Fit
