What the module does
Every call for heat runs through the ignition control. It handles the pre purge, energizes the ignitor, opens the gas valve, and watches for a proven flame within its trial window. If flame is not proved, it shuts the gas off and locks out. That last behavior is the reason a failed module is so often mistaken for a gas supply problem: the heater goes through the motions and then stops, with no obvious fault at the burner.
Single try versus multi try
This is the single try control, meaning one ignition trial per call for heat. Raypak also lists a multi try ignition control under its own part number. The two are not interchangeable in practice, so match the version your heater was built with rather than choosing on price or availability.
Before replacing it
Rule out the simple causes first. Gas pressure, a cracked or contaminated ignitor, and flame sense wiring all produce the same no fire symptom, and they are cheaper to check than a control module is to swap.
