What the board does
On an intermittent ignition heater the PC board is the brain. It reads the thermostat call, checks the safety circuit, sequences the ignition attempt, and shuts everything down if a limit or sensor reports a problem. When it fails the heater usually does nothing at all, or it locks out the moment it tries to fire.
