What it is for
Anywhere a rubber or plastic part has to seal and then come apart again, a silicone lube earns its place: pump lid o-rings, filter body o-rings, valve stems, unions and plastic gears. The compound is water repellent, which is what keeps it working on a part that sits in pool water, and it has a grease like consistency with high tack so it stays on the part instead of running off during assembly.
Why silicone and not petroleum grease
The compound is chemically inactive against the rubber and plastic it touches, so it will not swell or degrade an o-ring the way a petroleum product can. Its dielectric properties also make it usable around electrical fittings, and it works as a release agent, which is why a lubed o-ring lifts out cleanly at the next service instead of tearing.
