This is the Jacuzzi 42-3770-02 standpipe assembly with lateral, the snap fit version used in the Laser L160 top mount sand filter. It replaces the center pipe and lateral as one unit.
What the standpipe does
Inside a sand filter the standpipe runs down the middle of the tank through the sand bed. Water is pushed down through the sand, the lateral at the bottom collects the clean water, and the standpipe carries it back up to the multiport valve. The sand never gets past the lateral, which is exactly why a damaged one shows up so quickly.
When to replace it
If sand is turning up on the pool floor or blowing out of the returns after a backwash, look at the standpipe and lateral before anything else. A hairline crack in the pipe or a split slot in the lateral is enough to let media through. Because the assembly sits under the sand bed, replacing it means emptying the tank, so it is worth putting in fresh sand at the same time.
