Product details

This is the Jacuzzi 42-3770-02 standpipe assembly with lateral, the snap fit version used in the Laser L160 top mount sand filter. It replaces the center pipe and lateral as one unit.

What the standpipe does

Inside a sand filter the standpipe runs down the middle of the tank through the sand bed. Water is pushed down through the sand, the lateral at the bottom collects the clean water, and the standpipe carries it back up to the multiport valve. The sand never gets past the lateral, which is exactly why a damaged one shows up so quickly.

When to replace it

If sand is turning up on the pool floor or blowing out of the returns after a backwash, look at the standpipe and lateral before anything else. A hairline crack in the pipe or a split slot in the lateral is enough to let media through. Because the assembly sits under the sand bed, replacing it means emptying the tank, so it is worth putting in fresh sand at the same time.

Does the lateral come with it?
Yes. This is sold as an assembly, so the standpipe and the lateral arrive together.
Why is sand coming back into my pool?
On a sand filter the most common cause is a crack in the standpipe or a split in a lateral, which lets sand pass straight through to the return line. Replacing the standpipe assembly is the fix.
Is this a threaded part?
No. It is the snap fit version, where the lateral clips onto the standpipe rather than screwing on.
What do I need to do to change it?
The sand has to come out of the tank to reach the standpipe, so plan on emptying the filter and refilling it with fresh media once the new assembly is in.
