Product details

This is the Waterway Plastics 505-2150 lateral and manifold assembly for the 19 inch Carefree sand filter, supplied as the complete underdrain rather than as separate pieces.

What it does

The laterals and manifold sit at the bottom of the tank, buried in the sand. Water that has passed down through the bed enters through the slots in the laterals and leaves through the manifold, and the slots are what hold the sand back. When a lateral cracks or a slot opens up, sand goes straight through and comes out at the returns.

Fitting it

Because the assembly sits under the sand bed, the media has to be removed to reach it. Most people replace the sand at the same time, since it is already out of the tank and a bed that has been in service long enough to break a lateral is usually due anyway.

Which filter does this fit?
The 19 inch Carefree sand filter. Check the tank diameter before ordering, because the other Carefree sizes take different assemblies.
Does it include the laterals and the manifold?
Yes. It is supplied as the lateral and manifold assembly together.
Why would I need this?
Cracked or split laterals are the common cause of sand returning to the pool. Once a lateral fails, the filter still runs but sand passes through the underdrain and out of the returns.
Do I have to remove the sand to fit it?
Yes. The assembly sits at the bottom of the tank under the sand bed, so the sand has to come out to reach it. Plan on new media at the same time.
