What it does
The outlet tube and elbow form the path filtered water takes on its way out of the tank and back to the return plumbing. The o-rings on that path are what keep unfiltered water from taking a shortcut around the cartridges or grids.
Symptoms of a failed assembly
When the tube cracks or the o-rings harden, water bypasses the element. On a DE filter that shows up as powder returning to the pool, and on a cartridge filter as dirt that never quite clears no matter how recently the elements were washed.
