Product details

The Waterway Plastics 505-2160 is the lateral and manifold assembly for the 22 inch Carefree sand filter. It is the underdrain that sits at the bottom of the tank, below the media bed.

What it does

Filtered water leaves the tank through the slots in the laterals, and those slots are cut fine enough to pass water while holding the sand back. When a lateral cracks or a finger snaps off the manifold, media escapes into the return line and shows up on the pool floor. Replacing the assembly restores the barrier.

Before you start

Reaching the underdrain means draining the tank and removing the media, so plan the job as a full media change. With the tank open, look over every lateral rather than only the one that failed, because the rest have seen the same water and the same years.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Which filter does this fit?
The 22 inch Carefree sand filter. It is not the assembly for the other Carefree tank sizes.
Is this the laterals and the manifold together?
Yes. Part 505-2160 is supplied as the lateral and manifold assembly.
Why is sand blowing back into my pool?
A cracked or split lateral is the usual cause. The slots in a lateral are sized to pass water and hold media back, so once one breaks the sand goes straight through to the return line.
Do I have to remove the sand to fit it?
Yes. The assembly sits at the bottom of the tank under the media bed, so the filter has to be emptied and then recharged with fresh media.
