This is the Waterway 505-2080 lateral and manifold assembly for 26 inch ClearWater and TWM sand filters. It is the genuine Waterway part, supplied complete rather than as separate laterals you have to build up.
What the assembly does
The laterals sit at the bottom of the tank, buried in the sand bed. Water that has been through the media passes into the slots in the laterals, gathers at the manifold and heads back out to the pool. Everything else in the filter depends on those slots staying intact.
When to replace it
If sand starts appearing on the pool floor after the filter runs, a cracked lateral is the usual reason. Because the assembly is buried under the media, changing it means emptying the tank, so most owners fit a new one at the same time as a sand change rather than opening the filter twice.
