What it does
The upper piping is the internal plumbing that sits above the sand bed and distributes water across it. Everything the filter does depends on that water being spread evenly. When a joint splits or the assembly works loose, flow short circuits down one path, the bed stops filtering properly and sand can find its way into the return plumbing.
What the job involves
Replacing internal piping is a tank open job. The sand has to come out, which makes it the right moment to put in fresh media and renew the tank seals rather than reusing tired ones. While the filter is open, look over the laterals and the rest of the internals, because whatever aged this piping has been working on them for the same number of seasons.
